I am very excited to join the Olive Chapel family and teach in the first year-round school of my 20 year career. I have taught 2nd grade, 5th grade and even preschool though 3rd grade has always been my favorite. Following my graduation from the State University of New York College at Brockport, my new husband (& high school sweetheart) and I moved to Boynton Beach, Florida where I started my career teaching 3rd grade at Our Savior Lutheran School. Four years later we started our family being blessed with our first daughter. During my time away from teaching to raise our little girl we relocated to Cary, North Carolina where our second daughter was born. A few years later I was spending so much time volunteering at our daughters' school, my husband encouraged me to go back to teaching. After teaching three years at Yates Mill Pond Elementary and a year & a half at Cary Elementary, my husband's job took us on a three and a half year international assignment to Taiwan. While there I was lucky enough to teach 2nd grade at the Taipei American School. We returned home and I returned to Cary Elementary in 2010 where I have been teaching these last two years. With both our girls now off to college I decided to make a move to a year round school and now find myself very much enjoying my kids & cottage at Olive Chapel Elementary.

I came to OCE in 2008. I graduated from ECU--Home of the mighty pirates! ARRGGHHHH!!! I grew up mainly in Jacksonville, NC--home of the Marines of Camp Lejeune, but spent a few year in Jamaica. My family is Jamaican and we love our heritage and family traditions. My family means the world to me and we are
extremely close. I get my love of teaching from my mother who has been an educator for about 30 years now. She is a Principal of the Year from Onslow County and still currently works at an elementary school as Principal. My father works for the Department of Defense, and my baby brother just completed his first year at ECU with a 4.0! I love to read, write books, scrapbook, go to the movies, shop, and go antiquing! I love to teach and enjoy what I do. I will always be a life-long learner and enjoy promoting those same ideals in my students. I enjoy working at OCE because of the upbeat and positive environment.

I've been teaching at OCE since 2010 and have really enjoyed being a part of this fantastic community! I am originally from Rochester Hills, Michigan and received my teaching degree from Western Michigan University. Some of my hobbies include reading, camping, and anything that has to do with sports! I love watching my Detroit and Michigan teams! I enjoy teaching because it really allows me to connect with the students on a personal level. I understand how important laying the ground work for students of this age really is; not only on an academic level, but on a social level as well. That is something we strive for here at Olive Chapel. Go OCE Clippers!

These committees motivated me to become even more active in leadership. I attended graduate school at NC State and received the Principal Fellows Program Scholarship. After completing my degree I am excited to be back at Olive Chapel and to use my graduate degree to help impact more students. I love being an educator. I have a supportive and loving husband, Nate, and an eleven year old stepson. We love the beach and any chance we can get to go boating with my family in Maryland. I am a native Floridian, born and raised in Hollywood, Florida. I moved to North Carolina with my husband and two daughters in 2006 to experience a better quality of life and a better education for my girls. So far we really love it here! My teaching experience consists of 15 years as a classroom teacher and the past 2 years as the Instructional Resource Teacher at Olive Chapel Elementary. I graduated from The University of South Florida with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. On my free time- whenever that may be- I enjoy spending time with my family. The great NC weather allows us to get out and be active as a family. I also love it when the rest of the family-the grandparents- come up to visit us.

Is it true there are secret messages outside of my school?
Yes! (Look for these when you look at our school...easiest to see when leaves are gone!)
There are messages written on the outside of the building using nautical flags.
Each flag represents a letter of the alphabet. Flags were used to communicate at
sea before the advent of radios. The messages could be seen and read across long
distances. The Olive Chapel flags spell out... You didn't think we'd tell you,
did you? You have to do a little research to find out. Click on this link to learn about
nautical flags and to crack the code.
Since completing my Bachelor's in Speech & Theatre Arts with an Educational Media minor at Western Carolina University I have been employed in education in multiple capacities. I first taught high school English, Theatre and then became a Media Coordinator before briefly attending law school. I then worked as a Media Coordinator in one of the first magnet extended day schools in WCPSS. Within two years I returned to law school completing my degree early in December, 1981. Licensed in March 1982, I worked in various law and higher education positions from social services attorney; to student legal advisor, assistant dean for Student Affairs, Coordinator of Judicial Programs at NC State University; Assistant Dean at the Oklahoma City University School of Law; and in training and sales for Lexis-Nexis online legal research services. In 2000 I returned to the field of library media, as it was my first love, at Apex Elementary. In 2004 I received National Board Certification in K-12 Library Media, and in 2007 a Masters of Library Science. I received additional certification in Technology in Education (2012). My goal, simply put, is to support teachers and students via curriculum resources as well as teaching and promoting a life long love and joy of reading.

During that time, I earned my Master’s Degree and a Rank 1 (30 more hours) from Northern Kentucky University. We had two boys and enjoyed the Cincinnati area before deciding to move to Apex for my husband’s job. I knew I wanted to teach at OCE after my oldest son started kindergarten here in 2007. The teachers and students were amazing! I was excited for a position to continue my passion in life - teaching young children. Luckily, I was hired to teach kindergarten at OCE in 2008. I have been here since and I love it! The best part of my job is seeing the young faces grow before my eyes and having former students come back to visit. It’s an amazing journey and one I am blessed to be a part of. When I am not teaching I enjoy spending time with my family, being outdoors, running, shopping, and reading books. We love the beach, the lake and golfing. |

I was born and raised in Illinois (Cicero and Lombard). My family moved to Florida when I was a junior in high school. I earned my teaching degree from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. I was married in 1980 to my
husband, Greg. We ran our own home maintenance and construction business for 17 years on Beech Mountain, NC. We have two sons. We have always had many dogs in
our family - Siberian Huskies and German Shepherds. At one point, we had 3 Huskies and 1 German Shepherd. We moved to Boone, NC when our children were in elementary and middle school. We enjoyed camping and hiking as a family. We moved to Holly Springs, NC in 1999. We are currently living in Fuquay-Varina. I began working at Olive Chapel E.S. in 2000 with the AU-II class. I was an assistant in first grade and then moved to kindergarten. I enjoy working with the young students at Olive Chapel. The students, parents, and staff have been like an extended family for me! My favorite things to do in kindergarten are art center, reading books to the students, and all the "hands on" learning that help our students learn. It is amazing to see the progress that occurs with our "K" students in the school year!!!

The 2012-13 school year marks the beginning of my fifteenth ""voyage"" aboard the Olive Chapel Clipper Ship. I joined the teaching crew in 1998 having lived previously in Kansas where I taught ESL in a traditional kindergarten setting. I was born in New York, lived in New Jersey until I was eight, and then spent the remainder of my childhood living on the island of Trinidad in the West Indies. I have been fortunate to live in many states but now consider myself a Tar Heel. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Colorado State University in Pueblo. My true love for teaching began on my first day of student teaching at Pine Valley Elementary School at the United States Air Force Academy. My greatest joy as a teacher is to have the opportunity to fill young minds with knowledge, to spark curiosity, and to instill a love of learning. Seeing bright and eager faces every morning is why I teach. Every day and every year is a new adventure with five and six year-olds that believe all things are possible. My hope is that when children leave my room at the end of the year they have grown academically, socially, and emotionally and are proud of who they are and what they can accomplish. Olive Chapel is a wonderful place for both students and teachers where all children are reaching and achieving! My three grown children are my greatest gifts in life and I enjoy visiting them during track out. In my down time I enjoy reading, cooking, and spending time with friends.

I grew up in Myrtle Beach, SC, where I worked on the ocean front in our family business. My favorite things are still sitting with my feet in the sand and eating a big platter of seafood! I graduated from Furman University with a BA in English. I worked for a number of years as a technical writer for various utilities. Once our youngest child started preschool, I begin teaching 4yr/transition K preschool in a church environment and enjoyed that position for 10 years. I have been at OCE for 6 years, with most of that time spent in kindergarten. I have been fortunate to work with a dedicated kindergarten staff, and truly enjoy watching our youngest students become readers and writers.
