I have been in conversation with NCDOT for several months concerning the closing of Kelly Road. Two weeks ago, I was able to speak with the Apex Police and was pleased to have a meeting with Sgt. Greg Towell of the Apex PD, Leah DeLitizia and Jennifer Gregg from our PTA, and Dr. Savage.
During the meeting, we had long discussions about how to best meet the safety needs of our students with the changes in traffic patterns. There were many items to consider during our conversation: buses arriving and departing the bus loop in a timely manner; cars getting in and out of carpool; walkers crossing Olive Chapel and Kelly Road safely; and how to handle the increasing number of cars who drive and park to pick up students.
Below is a summary of the plan we developed (on the back of this letter is a map of the plan):
- Carpool traffic will travel down Kelly Road and do a “loop” (U-Turn) down by Kelly Road Park and enter the school by a RIGHT turn only (cones will be put up by Apex PD to prevent a left turn into the school).
- Cars exiting carpool will only be able to turn RIGHT onto Kelly Road from the OCE parking lot.
- The entrance into OCE from Olive Chapel Road at anytime during the day will be for Staff and Buses only (this includes the gravellot).
- Parents will be able to park in available spaces in the parking lot where carpool operates (the entrance is on Kelly Road).
We realize this new plan will impact many of you, and we appreciate your working with us to make these changes precipitated by the bridge closing a positive for our school and community. Please also know that Apex PD will be at OCE to monitor the first few days of the Kelly Road bridge closing and they will be providing us feedback on the above plan.
If you have questions/concerns, please contact administration.
Sincerely,
